Hoosiers Deliver Thousands of Petitions Opposing Mid-Decade Redistricting
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana voters, led by Indiana Conservation Voters, Common Cause Indiana, and allied democracy groups, delivered nearly 9,000 signatures, representing all 92 counties and every House and Senate district, to state leaders today at the Statehouse. The petitions urge Governor Mike Braun and lawmakers to reject outside interference and oppose mid-decade redistricting plans proposed by Washington operatives last month.
“Indiana isn’t a playground for electoral shenanigans, and we won’t let Washington outsiders tell us how to run our state,” said Megan Robertson, Executive Director of Indiana Conservation Voters. “Hoosiers play fair. We believe in honest elections, fair maps and a democracy that works for all of us. These signatures represent that commitment.”
The proposed redistricting plan would redraw Congressional districts years before the next census, undermining the fair map process completed just four years ago. Redrawing maps mid-decade would also waste hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
“This is nothing more than a partisan power grab initiated by out-of-state interests who don’t want Hoosier voters fairly represented,” said Julia Vaughn, Executive Director of Common Cause Indiana. “It’s a distraction from the real issues facing Hoosiers.”
Leaders from across the political spectrum, including former Gov. Mitch Daniels and former House Speaker Brian Bosma, have joined current lawmakers in voicing opposition. Meanwhile, Governor Braun has taken a “wait and see” approach.
In 2021, Indiana held more than a dozen public hearings across all nine congressional districts. The resulting maps were transparent, balanced and kept 84 of 92 counties whole. There were no legal challenges filed.
Recent polling showed a majority of Hoosiers don’t want a do-over; they want policymakers focused on real challenges. The survey showed 52% of voters oppose reopening the maps, with 43% very opposed. After hearing arguments, opposition climbs to 60%. Voters reported wanting leaders focused instead on cost of living, energy prices and property taxes.
Coalition partners emphasized that fair maps are about protecting democracy itself. “Every Hoosier deserves an equal voice in our elections,” said Jalyn Radiminski, CEO of Count Us IN. “Rejecting mid-decade meddling is about protecting that principle.”
