Indiana Conservation Voters Statement on the EPA Repeal of the Endangerment Finding
INDIANAPOLIS–Indiana Conservation Voters, a statewide nonprofit focused on clean energy, air and water, issued this statement following the announcement in Indianapolis today that the EPA will repeal the Endangerment Finding. The statement can be attributed to ICV Executive Director Megan Robertson.
The Endangerment Finding was first issued in 2009 and is the scientific and legal foundation that obligates the EPA to regulate six greenhouse gases, including carbon pollution, under the Clean Air Act. It recognizes that these emissions endanger public health and welfare, especially through their contribution to air quality degradation and atmospheric changes.
“Today’s announcement by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin—made right here in Indianapolis—marks yet another step backward for public health and environmental protection in Indiana and across the country.
“For nearly two decades, the Endangerment Finding has protected Hoosiers from unchecked emissions by requiring federal agencies to take action on pollution that makes our air harder to breathe and corrupts our water supply. Indiana already ranks among the worst states in the nation for air quality-related health outcomes, including asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Rolling back the Endangerment Finding removes a backstop against environmental harm at a time when our state faces significant challenges including increased heat, flooding and pollution.
“Repealing the Endangerment Finding gives more power to polluters and weakens protections for Indiana families, especially at-risk populations like children, the elderly and those affected by respiratory diseases. Shifting the cost of doing business onto Hoosiers forces us to pay with our health and our wallets. Deregulating safeguards will not make business decisions smarter—it just makes them dirtier. It sends a dangerous message that science and innovation can be dismissed when it’s politically inconvenient.
“Indiana Conservation Voters urges Hoosiers to speak out and step up. We don’t need the federal government to make Indiana a great place to live. We have the power to do so within our own state. With these protections stripped away, it becomes even more critical for state leaders to maintain strong safeguards that ensure our air and water are clean. Indiana regulators, lawmakers, and residents must fight even harder for environmental policies rooted in science and public health that will protect our communities and future generations.”
