Tell Indiana lawmakers consumers can’t afford to bankroll utilities + big business!

Indiana lawmakers currently are considering multiple bills that would shift the enormous potential costs of development and deployment of untested energy production onto ratepayers. One bill would even allow utilities to charge ratepayers for losses if the state forces them to keep burning dirty, expensive coal.

Instead of leaning into existing energy sources like wind and solar that we know are less expensive and more reliable than fossil fuels, these monopolies are suddenly infatuated by the prospect of small nuclear reactors that don’t currently exist and will be phenomenally expensive to build.

The way lawmakers have written these bills, Hoosiers who already are struggling with rising utility bills will bear the financial burden of an unproven technology. Instead of solving Indiana’s energy challenges, this strategy will create new economic hardships for families and small businesses across the state. Because of laws like this one, South Carolina ratepayers are still paying for a failed $9 billion project that left a giant hole in the ground.

Contact your representative today and tell them you want utilities and big businesses to pay for their own research and development of experimental technologies. Hard-working Hoosiers can’t afford any more charges on their monthly bills!

ASK YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO OPPOSE:

  • House Bill 1007, which shifts costs of small modular nuclear reactors (SMR) and outdated coal generation costs on to ratepayers.
  • Senate Bills 423/424, which contain identical language, creates a pathway for utilities to bill ratepayers up front for SMR project development costs.
